For Earth Day 2023, here at Joma we want to echo our commitment to looking after the environment.
Every year on 22nd April, the date declared by the UN in the 1970s, Earth Day is celebrated to raise awareness among humanity of the issues that harm our surroundings. “Invest in our planet” is the motto that has been chosen for this year, aimed at governments, companies and the general public. At Joma, as one of the main sports brands on the world stage and the top sports brand nationally, we are going to tell how we are doing our bit to help.
In 2021, we introduced Joma’s Positive Life Strategic Plan for Social Commitment. The areas for action that were selected and that we are now continuing to work on, are those that suffer degradations for different reasons and where we have something to add, like sport.
Sustainability in the production process
Ever since, at Joma we have been on the way to eliminating plastic from production. We are committed to sustainable sportswear and the use of environmentally-friendly fabrics, such as recycled polyester or organic cotton. However, many consumers are still not aware of the benefits of these materials for environmental health. That’s not a problem, we’re going to explain it to you:
Recycled polyester is made from recycled sources, especially PET bottles, which become a raw material. The advantages of this process are that, in addition to using materials that already existed before, CO2 emissions are reduced by 75% and the use of oil is avoided. Most of the official kits, like the football kits for example, belonging to #JomaTeams, contain it.
These are cotton fibres made in a production process which is free from pesticides, only using rainwater. We only include them in casual clothing.
For the new collections, we have included garments made in cotton obtained from truly sustainable crops. It comes from fields that have been handled with a more natural and respectful farming.
In addition, we have replaced the polluting plastic from our packaging with sustainable materials, gradually increasing the percentage of recycled cardboard or biodegradable polybags.
Renewable energy and reducing consumption
Since January 2023, half of the energy we have produced at Joma in a year comes from solar panels. Months earlier, we installed these photovoltaic modules at our 1510m2 central headquarters. In fact, in the long term, we expect all of Joma’s energy to come from renewable sources.
Equally, as part of responsible consumption, we have moved to using long-lasting and low consumption light bulbs.
