Developed with Miguel Heras, the TR-5 evolves with a lighter build that maintains the comfort, stability and protection required for ultra-distance racing.
In ultra-distance running, performance also means maintaining comfort as the kilometres add up. This idea has guided Joma’s work on the new TR-5, a model developed for 100 km races that combines a lighter build with the stability, protection and fit needed to perform over many hours.
Over this distance, staying comfortable for longer also means maintaining performance. Unlike shorter races, where responsiveness can make the difference, ultra-distance running places different demands on footwear. What matters is how the shoe performs when the hours begin to take their toll. To evolve the TR-5, Joma has focused on maintaining a comfortable, stable stride, protecting the foot and providing grip on uneven terrain.
Low weight is also fundamental to this approach. The aim was to lighten the shoe with a clear purpose: to maintain the support and protection runners need to keep moving forwards.
Miguel Heras brings his experience to the J Lab
The TR-5 was developed with Miguel Heras, whose experience in trail and ultra-distance running has helped assess the model in real conditions. His feedback on repeated foot strikes, changing terrain and lasting comfort during long races has been incorporated into the development process at the J Lab.
“In ultra-distance races, I am not looking for the most responsive shoe. I want one that feels comfortable and stable, and gives me the confidence to focus solely on running. That is what we have worked on with the TR-5,” explains the athlete.
For Joma, involving elite athletes in the development process at the J Lab means turning their experience into product decisions. The TR-5 applies this approach to one clear priority: over 100 km, comfort is part of performance.
Key features of the TR-5
Who is it designed for?
Long-distance and ultra runners preparing for 100 km or 100-mile races who prioritise comfort over many hours without compromising on low weight.
To understand what runners need on the trail, Joma’s team has translated those requirements into technical decisions, working on every component to achieve the right balance for its intended use.
1. Protection and fit
The heat-bonded Joma Sportech fit system is designed to eliminate friction points, while the reinforced toe cap provides additional protection.
2. A lightweight platform for the trail
Less weight with every stride without sacrificing cushioning or comfort, thanks to the Phy+ midsole, made from ultralight phylon to absorb impacts and create a smoother ride.
3. Stability and grip
The new Joma Grip outsole compound, tested by INESCOP, combines with 3.5 mm lugs to provide grip on technical terrain at the pace required for ultra-distance running.
