FC PAÇOS DE FERREIRA
The origin of football in Paços de Ferreira dates back to the 1930s, when the sport was first played by Sport Club Pacense, a group based in Meixomil, one of the parishes in the municipality. There were two decades of popular football without any professional organisation, until a competitive reorganisation and the appearance of the old Campo da Cavada led to the foundation, on 5 April 1950, of Futebol Clube Vasco da Gama, a group that is the genesis of the current one. FC Paços de Ferreira, the name that the Club started using at the beginning of the 1961/62 season. On March 15, 1981, the members decided to change the official colours of the team that the club wore, which became the colours of the county: yellow and green. The 2010/11 season was brilliant for FC Paços de Ferreira. Besides the seventh place in the championship, it reached the final of the League Cup, one of the most important competitions in the national calendar. The Pacense team faced SL Benfica in a great festive atmosphere that framed the Coimbra stadium and, despite the defeat (2-1), proudly added another final to their history. But the best was reserved for the 2013/2014 season, when they qualified for the UEFA Champions League after finishing the league in a spectacular 3rd place, only losing matches against FC Porto and SL Benfica. Since the 19/20 season they have been playing in the Portuguese first division and fighting to stay among the big teams in Portugal.
