Joma Sport is proud to announce the signing of elite marathon runner Weynay Ghebresilasie as its newest sponsored athlete in the United Kingdom, further strengthening the brand’s commitment to supporting top British athletic talent.
Ghebresilasie, 31, has established himself as one of Britain’s premier marathon runners since becoming eligible to represent Great Britain in international competition in January 2021. Born in Eritrea, Ghebresilasie competed in the 3000 metres steeplechase at the 2012 Summer Olympics where he served as the Eritrean flag bearer before seeking political asylum in the United Kingdom.
Since transitioning to marathon running in 2019, Ghebresilasie has competed in several prestigious events including London, Berlin, Amsterdam, and Rotterdam marathons, consistently placing in the top 20. His breakthrough performance came in 2022 when he finished 9th overall in the London Marathon as the first British runner to cross the finish line.
Ghebresilasie’s personal best of 2:09:50 ranks him 3rd all-time among Scottish marathon runners and 21st on the UK all-time list. His impressive résumé also includes national titles in Scotland for the 10-mile and half-marathon distances, as well as the 2022 UK championship in the marathon.
New expansion of Joma in the United Kingdom with Weynay Ghebresilasie
The sponsorship deepens Joma’s already strong presence in Scottish athletics, where the brand currently supplies kit to the national team and many local clubs, including Ghebresilasie’s own Shettleston Harriers in Glasgow. The Shettleston Harriers Ladies team – who have twice qualified for the European Club Cross Country Championships in recent years – already compete in the Joma kit.
Ghebresilasie is currently training at altitude in Iten, Kenya, where he is putting both himself and his new Joma gear through rigorous preparation for the upcoming London Marathon on April 27. His training regimen includes covering 100 miles weekly in Joma’s performance footwear and running apparel.
In short, Joma continues to demonstrate its commitment to elite athletics by incorporating these talented runners into the team, with the aim of conquering the main events on the national and international calendar. With athletes of the caliber of Dorine Jepchirchir, Teophilus Kipsang Yator, Reuben Mosin, and Mercy Jebet, Joma reaffirms its position as one of the leading brands in the world of running, supporting athletes in their pursuit of excellence.
