TATHIANA GARBIN
Tathiana Garbin, born in Venice on June 30, 1977, represents the perfect link between the generation of pioneers and the current golden era of Italian women’s tennis. A tenacious player with versatile skills and exceptional tactical intelligence, she reached a career-high world ranking of No. 22 in 2007.
In singles, Tathiana won the WTA title in Budapest in 2000, but she is especially remembered for her ability to shine against the legends of the sport. Two victories stand out:
- Roland Garros 2004: defeated the then-world No. 1 and defending champion.
- Indian Wells 2001: defeated the then-world No. 4.
She was also an outstanding doubles player, capturing 11 WTA titles in her career.
Since 2016, Tathiana has served as captain of the Italian National Team (Fed Cup, now Billie Jean King Cup). Under her leadership, Italy has experienced a remarkable revival, built on teamwork and resilience.
Her golden three-year period as captain is unprecedented:
- 2023: brought Italy back to the world final after 10 years.
- 2024: led the team to victory at the World Championship in Malaga, defeating Slovakia in the final.
- 2025: repeated the feat, winning a second consecutive world title by beating the USA in the final.
