FILIPPO VOLANDRI
Filippo Volandri, born in Livorno on September 5, 1981, has defined an era. A clay-court specialist, he captivated fans with his one-handed backhand, and today, as a non-playing Captain, he is leading Italy through an unprecedented era of global tennis success.
Volandri was Italy’s No. 1 for 218 weeks, reaching his career-high ATP ranking of No. 25 in July 2007. He won two ATP titles (Sankt Pölten 2004 and Palermo 2006) from nine finals, all on clay.
One of his most memorable achievements came at the 2007 Italian Open: at the Foro Italico, Filippo defeated the world No. 1 in straight sets, becoming one of the few Italians to ever beat a reigning ATP No. 1.
Since January 2021, Volandri has been the Captain of the Italian Davis Cup team, transforming it into an unstoppable force. Under his leadership, Italy achieved unprecedented feats in the modern era of tennis:
- 2023: Brought the Davis Cup back to Italy after 47 years.
- 2024: Secured a second consecutive title in Malaga.
- 2025: Won a third consecutive Davis Cup in Bologna, defeating Spain in the final.
These achievements make him the only captain in history (since the abolition of the Challenge Round) to win three consecutive editions, cementing his place among the world’s elite tennis coaches.
